BRIDGE Lacrosse Dallas Hosts Positive Coaching Alliance Workshops

03/28/2010

BRIDGE Lacrosse Dallas hosted three Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) workshops on March 7th and 8th for parents, coaches and board members. The workshops were led by PCA presenters who traveled from around the country. PCA's message focuses on "honoring the game" and teaching positive life lessons to kids through sports as opposed to just concentrating on the scoreboard and winning.

The three workshops were tailored for parents, coaches and board members of BRIDGE Lacrosse Dallas. The parent and coach workshops were also open to anyone who wanted to attend. We were thrilled to have close to 80 participants at the parent's workshop and close to 30 at the coaches' workshop.

The presenters delivered the key points of PCA teaching and highlighted their points by asking important questions of their audience, such as, "What do you do if your child has the last shot in a game, misses, and his team loses?" "What do you say to your child?" Or, as a coach, "How do you 'fill the emotional tank' of a player if she comes to practice after having a hard day at school?" For board members, "How do you create a culture of 'honoring the game' throughout your organization?"

With humor, skill and phenomenal speaking skills, the leaders led participants through the key tenants of 'honoring the game,' incorporated real-life scenarios, and encouraged everyone to learn from one another by sharing their experiences. Participants raved about the quality of the teaching. Not only was it a fantastic educational opportunity, but it also allowed BRIDGE parents, coaches and leaders to come together as a community.

At the first workshop, the Executive Director of PCA in Dallas, Barry Smink, presented Double-Goal Coach, Jack Tierney, with his award certificate. We are very proud to have one of only 20 Double-Goal coaches in the country coaching our boys' BRIDGE teams at St. Philips.

BRIDGE was able to host the three PCA workshops because of a generous grant from the U.S. Lacrosse Association. U.S. Lacrosse is an official partner of Positive Coaching Alliance. For more information on PCA, visit www.positivecoach.org.

Testimonial

"This was [my son's] second year playing lacrosse; lacrosse has made him more responsible....  He tries to make every game and to be on time for every game.  He's very responsible with this unlike most other things.  It keeps him in shape, too.  All the running wears him down."
