Irma Rangel Lacrosse Team Enjoys Retreat Outside Dallas
02/16/2010
Twenty-two Irma Rangel (IR) Panther lacrosse team members and five adult chaperones ventured a little over an hour outside Dallas for a weekend retreat of team building and bonding. Referred to as the "Lakehouse Lockin", the retreat took place at a private home on Cedar Creek Lake February 6-7.
The girls played games in which they got to know one another better and which required them to work as a team to complete assigned tasks. They also enjoyed playing charades, where prizes were awarded to the winning team. Coach Stephanie Walker awarded the top prize of the weekend, an
iPod Shuffle, to Diney Hobgood for answering correctly the most questions about women's lacrosse rules.
Shelby Casas, a tenth grader and a fourth year veteran of IR Lacrosse, said, "This was a really good team-building experience. I enjoyed getting to know things about people that I've known for years--stuff I wouldn't have found out any other way. It was fun for the whole team."
Sarah Aday, an eleventh grader and also a four year veteran, added, "It was good to hear what everybody expects of themselves and of the team. It will help us work together better as a team."
Eating only healthy food and snacks was an important part of the weekend's agenda. Fresh fruit, nuts, and unbuttered popcorn were offered as snacks and meals were built around fresh ingredients with lots of vegetables. According to Sally Ibarra, a twelfth grader and first year player, "When they first told us there wouldn't be any junk food, I didn't think they were serious. But the food we ate made me feel good about myself and that makes me feel more confident."
The weekend was such a success, plans are to continue it in future years as a perfect way to ready the players for the new lacrosse season.
Testimonial
"This was my second year coaching the St. Philip's team; I can definitely see a difference from last year to this year in the way the kids responded to new ideas and aspects of the game we weren't able to teach last year.... A lot of our emphasis this year was on respect and responsibility. They [the players] actually came to respect our motto for the season."
