St. Philip's School & Community Center Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Too

11/20/2009

Deciding the boys couldn't have all the fun, girls at St. Philip's School & Community Center have launched a 4th-6th grade lacrosse team. The LADY SAINTS as the team will be known, is coached by Misty Pressley, mother of two girls at the school and a former soccer and basketball coach.

According to Pressley, "So many of these girls have watched their brothers playing lacrosse and seen how much they love it. They want to enjoy the same fun and team bonding the boys have for the past five years. We're thrilled girls lacrosse is finally coming to St. Philip's."

The team's first practice took place November 15 and was led by Hockaday varsity lacrosse coach, Elia Kochan, and seven player assistants. With so many coaching assistants, the new players received lots of one on one instruction. The practice ended with a scrimmage so the girls could experience the fun of actually playing lacrosse.

"I've seen [my son's] work ethic has increased at school and at lacrosse.  They have taken some licks and have bounced back.  Same as in life--you get knocked down, you have to get back up.  In lacrosse, you have to get back up because the game keeps going.  There's teamwork involved--it has made my older son more of a leader.  He helps the younger kids.  It has made him more responsible."
